CGS Carbon Adsorption Systems

CGS' CARBON ADSORBER SYSTEMS are designed for the removal of a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxic contaminants, and odorous gases emanating from industrial process airstreams. The product line is a direct result of the stringent emission regulations regarding hazardous compounds.

The heart of the adsorber is the activated carbon media. Gaseous pollutants are attracted to the carbon surfaces and adsorbed into the internal pore structure of the carbon granules. This high porosity provides the large surface area required for effective contaminant removal. Various carbon sizes and chemically impregnated media are available for specific pollutants. For example, standard activated carbon is utilized for the abatement of traditional VOCs such as acrylonitrile, benzene, MEK, phenol, and trichloroethylene. Specialized carbons are provided for targeted compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, formaldehyde, ammonia, acid gases, and others.

CGS selects CARBON MEDIA for its high adsorption capacity, effective surface area, mechanical strength, wide range of contaminant removal, and low pressure drop characteristics in order to meet the highest performance requirements.

In a VERTICAL TOWER, the contaminated airstream enters radially near the vessel bottom. The air then flows vertically upward through the activated carbon bed. Intimate contact occurs between the airstream and the carbon media. This results in the effective mass transfer of the contaminants from the gas stream and into the carbon. The clean gas exits vertically out of the top of the adsorber while the contaminants are retained in the carbon bed.


Standard adsorber dimensions and airflow capacities are shown in Chart #CA-25.

Once the CARBON MEDIA has reached the determined capacity for a particular set of pollutants (media life), it is removed from the vessel. The adsorber is then recharged with fresh carbon media. An access manway is provided for this purpose. Sample ports are supplied upstream and downstream of the carbon bed. These can be used for pressure drop measurements, temperature monitoring, or to aid in determining carbon changeout. A bottom drain fitting is included for condensate removal.

CGS CARBON ADSORBERS are available in epoxy coated carbon steel, 316L stainless steel, or FRP. Customized designs such as DOWNFLOW UNITS, RECTANGULAR MODULES, and alternate construction materials can be supplied to suit specific process and layout requirements. Skid mounted systems complete with interconnecting ducting, system fan, and instrumentation are available for easy installation.
